Q: Can you put a different chain on the NBC110 (chain conversion kits)
A: There are a few suppliers offering chain conversion kits for the NBC110 Super Cubs. They offer the same chain used by the CT110 bikes, 428 pitch. In theory this seems to be a good idea as it is a stronger chain and therefore should be longer lasting. HOWEVER the NBC110 is not designed for a heavier chain and in time the larger chain will snap the counter shaft (drives front sprocket). then you are up for potentially thousands of dollars in replacing the shaft and any possible damage to the surrounding gears or even the outer casing, which I have seen first hand.
You can reference Honda Recall Bulletin SBMCAP1702 where Honda issued a notice regarding an issue with the NBC110’s requiring replacement countershafts early in the bikes life. This indicates that the counter shafts, even with the smaller chains are experiencing severe wear and tear at a fast pace.
Our recommendation is to stick with the DID chains, this is the company that manufactures the original chains supplied with the bike and you can see this in the parts break down. These chains are the best quality you can purchase and experience little stretching and have more longevity and won’t place extra strain on your counter shaft. We highly recommend the DID PRO chain to all of our contractor customers, it has a very long life.
